My Favorite stories of all time when I was a child was "The Little Red Hen". It's a book series published by Little Golden Books in the 1940's. The Little Red Hen is believed to be based on Russian folk tale. In my life's journey, I have had to reflect on this little gem of a book and the wonderful characteristics it portrayed. If you have children, try the "Little Red Hen".
I have three daughters and raising them as a single parent there were some very difficult moments. But, by the Grace of God, I remembered the "Little Red Hen" and life seem to be manageable.
I remember Easter weekend in 2008 taking my grandchildren ages 12, 9 and 6 to Tractor Supply to see the little chicks they were selling. After seeing the chicks my grandchildren insisted on taking some home. I only wanted to take home one or two but we were told “you just couldn't buy one, the minimum you had to buy was six.” I told my grandchildren, no way was that going to happen because we had no place to keep them. But, children are resultant and persuasive. They firmly insisted that they could build a place to keep them. With begging and pleading, away we went to Home Depot to pick up the necessary items - boards, wire, staples, and nail to build a home for six chicks.
It is now Good Friday. The children and I have started to build a chicken pin and in short order we had constructed an 8' x 3' x 3' enclosure and placed it in the garage. On Saturday, we were back at Tractor Supply for pine fakes, feeders, water container, 3 Pullets chicks and 3 Buff Orpington chicks. The children loved them and played with them Friday and Saturday.
Easter Sunday, we prepared to go to church and all of a sudden it struck me, my grandchildren had to go home after church, but the chicks remained. What was I going to do????
Never did I think it would come a time when I would raise such beautiful animals, like the Little Red Hen. My journey began with 6 little chicks.
Come and enjoy my journey!
