My Favorite stories of all time when I was a child was "The Little Red Hen". It's a book series published by Little Golden Books in the 1940's. "The Little Red Hen" is believed to be based on Russian folk tale. In my life's journey, I have had to reflect on this little gem of a book and the wonderful characteristics it portrayed. If you have children, try the "The Little Red Hen".

I have three daughters and raising them as a single parent there were some very difficult moments. But, by the Grace of God, I remembered the characteristics of "The Little Red Hen".  It was her can do attitude that inspired me whenever I had to  face major challenges.

I remember Easter weekend in 2008 taking my grandchildren ages 12, 9 and 6 to Tractor Supply to see the little chicks they were selling. After seeing the chicks my grandchildren insisted on taking some home. I only wanted to take home one or two but we were told “you just can't buy one, the minimum you have  to buy is six.”  I told my grandchildren, no way was that going to happen because we had no place to keep them.  But, children are persuasive. They firmly insisted that they could build a place to keep them.  With begging and pleading, away we went to Home Depot to pick up the necessary items - boards, wire, staples, and nails to build a home for six chicks.

It is now Good Friday.  The children and I have started to build a chicken pin and in short order we had constructed an 8' x 3' x 3' enclosure and placed it in the garage.  On Saturday, we were back at Tractor Supply for pine flakes, feeders, water container, 3 Pullets and 3 Buff Orpington chicks.  The children loved them and played with them all day.

Easter Sunday, we prepared to go to church and all of a sudden it struck me, my grandchildren were going back to their home after church, but the chicks had to remain with me.  What was I going to do????

Never did I think it would come a time when I would raise such beautiful animals, like "The Little Red Hen". My journey began with 6 little chicks.

Come and enjoy my journey!
